FAVELA AND CITY:

THE STRENGTH OF THE PLACE'S RESPONSE

ABOUT

Âncora 1

This research project was developed as part of the activities to be developed during the collaboration period (stipulated in four months) by the Visiting Foreign Professor Francesco Lucarelli of Facoltà di Economia, Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II (Italy), along with the Program of Postgraduate Studies in Urbanism (PROURB-FAU-UFRJ) .The investigation intends to study three forms of periphery in course in the contemporary metropolis: the periphery in the heart of the metropolis; the social periphery and the marginal periphery. At the same time, popular settlements are seen as the production of a rational, intelligent and flexible system for the use of space, which results in the solidification of multiple networks of solidarity among the inhabitants. As a methodological strategy it is proposed to elaborate a preliminary analysis on the conception and the main results achieved by the Favela-Bairro Program, implemented by the City of Rio de Janeiro, in the 90's. It is expected that the analysis of an experience concrete and paradigmatic approach in the field of favela urbanization, such as the Favela-Bairro Program, constitutes the backdrop for the reflections to be developed in this research, allowing not only to identify the errors and successes of the strategies and practices adopted, but also to investigate the epistemological content of socially constructed representations. The main results of the research will be organized in the form of a scientific book, to be published jointly by PROURB-FAU-UFRJ and the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II.
