INTERVENTIONS IN HISTORIC CENTERS:
CRITICAL REVIEW AND URBANISTIC ALTERNATIVES
FOR THE REVITALIZATION OF THE TRADITIONAL URBAN TISSUE
ABOUT
Over the past two decades, we have seen a series of interventions, sponsored by the government, in Brazilian historic centers. The results obtained, however, have not been shown to be economically and socially sustainable or even entirely acceptable in relation to the preservation criteria adopted by the bodies responsible for the protection of Cultural Heritage, indicating the need for a broad conceptual review regarding practices and to the solutions adopted. With a necessarily transdisciplinary approach, the present research project intends to advance this debate, seeking to overcome theoretical and methodological impasses and pointing out ways and alternatives for future interventions. To this end, we selected, as the object-of-study, six programs to revitalize central areas, implemented by the Public Administration, since the late 1970s: the Cultural Corridor Project, in Rio de Janeiro (1970/1980); the Reviver Project, in São Luís (1980); the Salvador Historical Center Recovery Project (1990); the Bairro do Recife Revitalization Project, in the city of Recife (1990); the Belém Historic Center Revitalization Program (1990); and the project to revitalize the port area of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Maravilha (2009).
