THE UNIVERSITY BUILT CULTURAL HERITAGE IN THE

FORMATION OF RIO DE JANEIRO'S URBAN SPACE

ABOUT

This research project seeks to understand the participation of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in the process of forming the urban space of the city of Rio de Janeiro from a transdisciplinary reading (cultural, architectural, functional, urban, symbolic and political) of its heritage cultural heritage. This research aims to constitute a theoretical-methodological framework that subsidizes cultural protection policies for university built cultural heritage, ranging from integrated conservation plans for this heritage to greater interaction with the city. This research presents itself as a demand that has been present for some time at UFRJ and in the supervisory bodies that conferred patrimonial value (municipal, state and / or national) to thirteen of its built buildings and gardens. Rio de Janeiro is one of the states that has one of the largest collections of university-built heritage without, however, a closer look at the specificities of this heritage that defines territories and participates in the formation of memories and identities of those who experience it. At the national level, we have some interesting experiences in the management and conservation of university heritage, such as UFRGS, USP and FIOCRUZ, which have already contributed with us in seminars and with which we intend to strengthen our research network on university cultural heritage, thus coming to supply the still scarce bibliography on the topic. One of the products of this research will be the elaboration of the? Roadmap of the built cultural heritage of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro: a journey through the history of the city, the institution and the knowledge ?, with the data collected, to be made available on the website. The elaboration of a product that synthesizes and presents this heritage to a wider audience, in the form of a Roadmap, may come to strengthen the ties between the university and society. Finally, it is important to highlight the articulation between academic research focused on issues of cultural heritage and contemporary cities (LAPA / PROURB / UFRJ) and the formulation of policies to protect built heritage (SiMAP / FCC / UFRJ).
